Addressing Diabetes, Heart Health Go Hand-in-Hand for American Heart Month

By Dr. Edleen Sarette-Exama, DNP, MSN RN, Care Coordinator, VNS Health Health Plans  Bronx Voice  February 18, 2025 BRONX - While February is Heart Health Month, given the statistics, heart health should really be a priority all year long.  In New York State alone, almost 18% of adults 65 and older report they have some form of cardiovascular disease (CVD), and 27% of all deaths are the result of CVD. And here’s another alarming fact: While many factors can increase the chances of cardiovascular disease and stroke, people with diabetes have twice the chance of developing CVD compared to the population as a whole. As a registered nurse and care manager at the home- and community-based health care nonprofit VNS Health, I work with individuals who often suffer from multiple chronic illnesses. Diabetes in particular is  common, especially among people of color. Diabetes is a challenging disease to manage, and it can fee...

BRONX - History was made in the Bronx last night when the first presidential candidate in 40 years held a campaign event in deep blue Bronx. Donald Trump took the stage in Crotona Park before a welcoming crowd of close to 25,000, shocking Dems.

Days after the prosecution and defense each rested their case in the first-ever criminal trial of a former U.S. president, Donald Trump spoke before a large crowd in Crotona Park in the South Bronx. This was the first time a Republican presidential candidate has campaigned in the Bronx since Ronald Reagan in 1980.

Warming up the crowd for Trump was Andrew Giuliani, the son of former Trump Attorney Rudy Giuliani and former senator and Reverend Ruben Diaz, Sr., who Trump later invited on stage.

“I’m here tonight to declare we are going to turn New York City around,” Trump said before a crowd waving Puerto Rican, Dominican, Israeli and American flags. “I’ve never seen it quite like this.”

The warm reception was shocking to Bronx Democrats and the media who expected more protesters than supporters to show up. In addition to the t-shirts of Trump’s mugshot, other supporters and Bronxites sported “MAGA” tattoos and hats. One even had a “Donald Trump” license plate.

During his speech, Trump stressed a New York City and a country in decline under President Biden.

“Our subways are squalled and unsafe, the ceiling tiles are falling down, and they look worse than a third-world country,” Trump said.

“We are not going to let this continue. We are not going to abandon our hope and our pride. This city has given us so much, and now it is time that we are going to give it back. Together we are going to make New York City great again,” Trump said.

“Joe Biden is the worst president in the history of our country. He has no sense — doesn’t know what he’s doing, is grossly incompetent,” Trump said.

“Our country’s going to hell, but we’re gonna turn it around,” the former president said.

Trump said if he is reelected, he would end restricting regulations, boost the U.S. economy and deport illegal immigrants as well as bring down crime in New York City.

When speaking about the migrant problem the diverse crowd chanted “Send them Back” and “Build the Wall.”

Trump is currently facing 34 felony counts of falsified business records pertaining to a $130,000 payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 Presidential Election. Closing arguments in the case are expected to begin on Tuesday.
