HEALTH - Nurses Week is a time to reflect on the incredible work of nurses and the impact they have on our community.

Whether it is educating a new mother on how to care for her newborn baby, the surgical nurse partnering with operating room colleagues to save a life, giving needed medicine to someone who is ill, or comforting a family member after the passing of a loved one, nurses are passionate about the care we deliver and the positive influence we can make on the lives of our patients and their families.

As we approach Nurses Week, we feel honored to be a part of such a rewarding profession. Nurses do it all with kindness, empathy, knowledge, and skill.

As the needs of our patients evolve, so does the care and skillsets of our nurses. Two areas we are proud to share updates on are in the areas of nursing-led education and research.

Setting New Standards in Nursing Excellence

Continuous education is of paramount importance in healthcare. At Montefiore, we offer multiple educational opportunities like financial support to attendance at national conferences, and review classes for certification exams in various specialties such as critical care and oncology, in addition to tuition reimbursement.

Last year, efforts to meet and exceed rigorous nursing standards resulted in our Montefiore Wakefield Hospital earning the American Nursing Credentialing Center Magnet Recognition© – fewer than 9% of hospitals nationwide achieve this distinction for nursing excellence and high-quality patient care.

Building on these efforts, our nurse leaders are working to understand the needs of new nurses. By doing so, we are ensuring our onboarding processes help nurses enter the workplace with confidence, and we can evaluate what educational offerings can be provided so there is comfort in practicing in environments like our emergency departments.

Redefining Nursing-Led Research

In addition to nursing-led education, nursing research at Montefiore is an area that is growing and evolving. Research efforts are focused on what is happening in our hospitals and primary care locations in addition to the social determinants of health, the conditions that people are born into, work and live in like housing, transportation, and education, which impact health outcomes.

In fact, just last week, a nurse practitioner in our Montefiore Einstein Cancer Center and assistant professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Hilda Haynes, PhD, ANP-BC, AOCNP, presented an interim analysis at the Oncology Nursing Society annual conference that looked at workplace accommodations during cancer care, and how people with cancer cope while stressed.

This type of research effort builds off our nursing research infrastructure and we hope will inform national nursing-led efforts to advocate on behalf of our patients.

Another notable example of nursing-led research success is our partnership with families to help prevent vulnerable patients from falling. Our Falls Tips program, which is research informed, and in collaboration with Brigham and Women’s, part of Mass General Brigham, and others, has resulted in a 35% reduction in total falls with injury, and a 29% reduction in total falls since 2016. These are just some examples of Montefiore nursing-led research, which is positively impacting patient care.

Nursing led research is an important aspect of the required development of new knowledge and a standard to be upheld for Magnet designation.

Nursing-led education and research efforts are just starting to hit their stride. We look forward to reporting on more nursing-led projects which span our healthcare system.

In the meanwhile, when you see a nurse, know that these remarkable men and women are working diligently to provide care while at the bedside and much more is happening behind-the-scenes.

Happy Nurses Week to you all!
