BRONX LOCAL NEWS - A Woodlawn man has been convicted of opening fire at an illegal social club in University Heights, killing a 20-year-old woman and wounding two men in October 2020.

On November 25, a Bronx judge sentenced Domingo Berroa, 37, to 20 years to life for the October 19, 2020, shooting at Mix-Tec, a restaurant operating as an illegal social club at 2345 Jerome Avenue at North Street in University Heights. Berroa had been convicted by a Bronx jury.

Police reported at the time that Wendolin Ortiz, 19, of East 163rd Street, was shot one time during the 7 a.m. shooting. She was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital where she died. A 28-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the arm and a 30-year-old man was struck three times in various parts of his body. Both men were taken to St. Barnabas Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to the Bronx District Attorney’s office, Berroa got into an argument with someone inside the club and opened fire, killing Ortiz, who was an innocent bystander. Berroa was arrested the following day at John F. Kennedy International Airport. According to police he was captured with a one-way ticket to his native Dominican Republic.

Police set up a crime scene outside of an illegal social club after an early morning shooting on Jerome Avenue on October 19, 2020.

Telemundo 47 reported at the time that Ortiz was also an innocent bystander when she was shot inside the same club four months earlier.

In announcing Berroa’s conviction, Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark said, “The defendant put people’s lives at risk when he opened fire inside a nightclub. His reckless actions caused the death of a 19-year-old woman who was enjoying a night out. No one should have to fear they are risking their lives by enjoying our borough’s nightlife.

Berroa was sentenced to 20 years to life for the conviction of second-degree murder and 10 years in prison and five years post release supervision of the conviction of criminal possession of a weapon. The two sentences will run concurrently.

On October 24, 2020, the Bronx District Attorney held a gun buyback event at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on East 222 Street that removed 136 firearms that included more than 90 revolvers, assorted riles and shotguns and one assault rifle.
