The FDNY responded just after midday to 1520 Sheridan Avenue, where flames had erupted in apartment 6H. According to officials, the first units arrived in under four minutes. Despite that quick response, the fire had already pushed its way into the cockloft—the space between the top-floor ceiling and the roof—and began spreading into nearby apartments.
In total, more than 170 firefighters and EMS personnel rushed to the scene, along with officers from the NYPD’s 44th Precinct. Nine people suffered minor injuries as crews worked their way through the smoke-filled building.
But as firefighters searched the apartments, they made a grim discovery: inside one unit, they found a 73-year-old woman who was unconscious and unresponsive. She was immediately brought outside, where EMS pronounced her dead. Police later said her body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner so an autopsy can determine how she died.
FDNY officials made clear that the woman’s death was not related to the fire, though investigators haven’t yet shared additional details.
By around 5:15 p.m., crews finally got the blaze under control. It took hours of work and a massive response due to the building’s non–fireproof construction and the speed at which the flames traveled through the upper floors.
FDNY Fire Marshals are now digging into what sparked the fire in the first place.
Bronx detectives are also part of the investigation, given the death discovered during the response.
More updates are expected as officials learn more about both the fire’s origins and the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
