BRONX, NY — Expectant mothers and families in the Bronx are getting an upgraded hospital experience as Montefiore Einstein unveils its newly renovated labor and delivery suite at Jack D. Weiler Hospital, backed by a $9.68 million New York State health care transformation grant.

Located on the sixth floor of the hospital at 1825 Eastchester Road, the revamped Weiler Mother Baby Unit features modernized labor and delivery rooms, an upgraded maternal surgical suite, redesigned triage areas and improved patient amenities. The project aims to create a more welcoming environment while strengthening the hospital’s ability to care for complex and high-risk pregnancies.

The renovation was funded through New York State’s Statewide Health Care Facility Transformation Program.

Inside the Upgraded Bronx Maternity Unit

The newly unveiled Montefiore Einstein labor and delivery suite in the Bronx includes several major improvements designed to support patients, families and medical teams.

Highlights include:

  • Modern labor and delivery rooms with private, en-suite bathrooms.
  • Expanded maternity triage services, featuring six triage bays and a separate evaluation bay.
  • An upgraded maternal surgical suite with a dedicated post-anesthesia care unit for C-section patients, including four recovery bays.
  • Improvements to three delivery-room operating rooms to support surgical deliveries.
  • Redesigned clinical workstations and workflows to help care teams coordinate patient care.
  • Enhanced lighting, remote monitoring technology and new food options to improve comfort and the overall patient experience.

Together, these upgrades are intended to make the unit more comfortable for families while equipping clinicians to manage complicated deliveries and other urgent maternal health needs.

Hospital Expands High-Risk Pregnancy Care Across the Bronx

Jack D. Weiler Hospital serves as a regional perinatal center, caring for high-risk pregnancies throughout the Bronx and parts of Queens.

Angela Gonzalez-Perez, MPA, FACHE, vice president of operations and executive director of Jack D. Weiler Hospital, said the renovation reflects the hospital’s commitment to creating a welcoming setting for patients while delivering advanced medical care.

The project also comes as Montefiore Einstein continues expanding its maternal health services and specialist workforce.

Under the leadership of Mark H. Einstein, M.D., M.S., who became chair of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s Health in 2024, the department has added 26 physicians specializing in areas including critical care obstetrics, adolescent medicine and onco-fertility. Nurse practitioners and physician assistants have also joined the team.

Additional services include universal depression screening during hospitalization, collaboration with reproductive psychiatry specialists, a dedicated postpartum outpatient clinic for patients with medically complex or high-risk pregnancies, and a cardiac maternal medicine program.

These services complement the hospital’s investment in high-risk pregnancy care in the Bronx, where coordinated medical support can be especially important before, during and after childbirth.

New Technology and Workflows Support Complex Deliveries

The renovation was designed to improve both the physical environment and the way clinical teams deliver care.

“With the new technology upgrades and redesigned workflows, we are equipped to take care of the most complex cases and do so in a beautiful new family friendly atmosphere,” said Rodney Wright, M.D., vice chair of Obstetrics.

Mark H. Einstein, who also serves as a professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s Health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, said the unveiling represents another step in expanding the department’s services for patients and their loved ones.

Hospital leaders say the redesigned unit will support more coordinated care while offering families a more comfortable environment during labor, delivery and recovery.

Renovation Nears Completion in 2027

The Jack D. Weiler Hospital maternity unit renovation has been completed in phases, allowing patient care to continue without interruption.

Five of the project's six phases are complete. The final phase will include renovations to the remaining two labor and delivery rooms and an upgrade to a back service elevator, with completion planned for early 2027.

For Bronx families seeking information about maternity care and high-risk pregnancy services at Montefiore Einstein, the project marks a significant investment in the hospital’s facilities, technology and clinical services.

With upgraded delivery rooms, expanded triage capacity and a growing team of specialists, Montefiore Einstein is continuing to develop its maternal care services for patients across the Bronx and neighboring communities.
