BRONX, NEW YORK - While a Bronx community was holding back tears and lighting candles and releasing balloons for the young mother who fell from a balcony, her alleged killer flashed a chilling smile while he was being led out in handcuffs. Yesterday during his video araignment he was no longer smiling from a Bronx psyche ward as he pled not guilty to fatally pushing his former girlfriend and his infant daughter off the 15-story balcony.
Angel Carrasco, 31, appeared virtually from a psychiatric ward during his arraignment, pleading not guilty to charges stemming from the October 5 tragedy that killed his former girlfriend, 23-year-old Nathaly Ramirez.
Their 8-month-old baby girl, Angel Novalty Carrasco-Ramirez, survived the 15-story fall but suffered life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized at Jacobi Hospital, according to the criminal complaint.
Bronx Criminal Court Judge Cary Fischer ordered Carrasco held in custody and issued a full order of protection for the infant.
Alleged Bronx Balcony Attack Left Baby Fighting for Her Life
According to law enforcement sources, Carrasco allegedly showed up at Ramirez’s Allerton, Bronx, apartment with flowers, hoping to repair their troubled relationship.
The visit came after two reported domestic violence incidents involving the couple earlier this year.
But the apparent reconciliation attempt allegedly ended in horror.
At approximately 3:40 a.m. on October 5, Carrasco allegedly threw his former girlfriend and infant daughter from a 15-story balcony before fleeing the scene, sources said.
Nathaly Ramirez was killed in the fall. Their daughter miraculously survived but was left with critical injuries.
Authorities arrested Carrasco the following day in an operation involving the U.S. Marshals Service and NYPD.
As he was escorted toward a police vehicle in handcuffs, Carrasco appeared to flash a wide, chilling smile — a disturbing image that stood in stark contrast to the grief and heartbreak sweeping the Bronx community.
Accused Man Had Previous Domestic Violence Incidents
The allegations come after two reported domestic violence incidents involving Carrasco and Ramirez in January.
In one incident, Carrasco allegedly slapped Ramirez twice after she refused to speak with him, according to law enforcement sources.
Three days later, he allegedly broke into her apartment.
The earlier incidents now form part of the disturbing history surrounding the fatal October encounter. Carrasco has not been convicted of the current charges, and the allegations against him remain unproven in court.
Nathaly Ramirez Remembered as a Hardworking Young Mother
As the legal case moves forward, Ramirez’s death has left loved ones and Bronx residents devastated.
Community members gathered to honor the young mother, lighting candles and releasing balloons as they struggled to hold back tears while remembering a life cut tragically short.
Ramirez attended Baruch College and worked at Lishawns Consulting in Manhattan.
A representative for the company described her as a “rising star” who was “very hardworking,” remembering a young woman whose future was cut short by the deadly incident.
Her infant daughter remains hospitalized as she continues to recover from injuries sustained in the fall.
Angel Carrasco Faces Multiple Criminal Charges
Carrasco is charged with murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, assault and endangering the welfare of a child childinin connection with the incident.
He has been held in a psychiatric ward since his arrest and appeared remotely for his arraignment.
The judge ordered him to remain in custody while the case proceeds and imposed a full order of protection for the surviving child.
As prosecutors pursue the case, Nathaly Ramirez’s family and the Bronx community are left grappling with an unimaginable loss: a young mother killed, an infant fighting to recover, and a Bronx tragedy that has shaken the community.
