BRONX, NY - A 31-year-old Bronx man has been arrested after police say he pushed his former girlfriend from a 15th-floor balcony while she was holding their 8-month-old daughter.
Angel Carrasco was arrested around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday after detectives received information about his whereabouts, police said.
Investigators said Carrasco’s brother went to the 49th Precinct and told detectives where he was hiding.
Members of the Regional Fugitive Task Force later took Carrasco into custody.
Police allege Carrasco pushed 23-year-old Nathaly Ramirez from the balcony of the Allerville Arms apartment building in Allerton early Tuesday morning. Ramirez was holding the couple’s infant daughter when she fell, investigators said.
Ramirez suffered fatal injuries.
Her baby survived and remained in stable condition Thursday. Police said the infant improved enough to be flown by helicopter from Jacobi Hospital to Cohen Children’s Medical Center in Glen Oaks for specialized care.
Carrasco faces charges including murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, attempted manslaughter and assault. He is expected to be arraigned Thursday.
Police Say Surveillance Captured Carrasco Leaving
Investigators said surveillance video showed Carrasco leaving the apartment building after the incident.
Detectives also found flowers inside Ramirez’s apartment. Police believe Carrasco had brought them as part of an effort to reconcile with Ramirez following recent disputes.
Authorities said the couple had a documented history of domestic violence.
In January, Carrasco was charged with allegedly slapping Ramirez during an argument. Days later, police charged him with burglary, alleging he broke into Ramirez’s apartment while looking for her.
Friends Remember Ramirez as a Loving Mother
As word of Ramirez’s death spread Wednesday, friends, former classmates and neighbors gathered outside the apartment building to mourn the young mother.
Flowers and candles filled a growing memorial outside the building. Several of Ramirez’s former classmates from Bronx Leadership Academy came to pay tribute.
Death Renews Focus on Domestic Violence
Ramirez’s death has also renewed attention on domestic violence during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Her photograph has been added to a memorial wall honoring victims of domestic violence.
