67-Year-Old Biker Recovering after Collision with MTA Bus

BRONX, NEW YORK - Citizen App video captured the moment when a 63-year-old man briefly had his arm pinned under a wheel near the middle of a 60-foot “articulated” MTA bus at the busy intersection of Pelham Parkway South and White Plains Road.

 

According to police, the Bx-12 “Select Bus” was traveling eastbound along Pelham Parkway South when at White Plains Road the bus collided with the biker at 11:48 a.m. on Wednesday, September 23. At the time the bus was headed toward Co-op City and City Island.

A police official told the Bronx Voice, “Police responded to a 911 call for a pedestrian struck.” As officers from the 49^th Precinct arrived at the scene, the official continued, “The 67-year-old male operator of an MTA bus, reported that he was traveling on Pelham Parkway with the green light when the bicyclist operated by a 63-year-old male, rode in front of the bus against the red light, causing the bus to collide with the bicyclist.”

 

The official added that the bicyclist was transported by EMS to Jacobi Hospital and only suffered “minor injuries.”

 

The Citizens App video clearly shows that the “bicycle” police described was actually a motorized scooter.

 

News 12 spoke to one witness who stated that the man on the bicycle was carrying a puppy at the time of the crash. 

The Bronx Voice was unable to confirm this, and if true, the condition of the puppy is still unknown.

 

Nearly two hours after the collision, four automobiles dispatched by the MTA were parked in front of the bus involved in the crash. A window for the bus’ front door was shattered. And an EMS paramedic vehicle was behind the bus. 

A paramedic was observed taking the blood pressure of an MTA employee. An ambulance then arrived and EMS members walked the MTA employee over to the ambulance. Meanwhile, an overflow of passengers waited at the bus stop and swarmed buses as they arrived.

 

The Bronx Voice asked Joana Flores, a media liaison with the MTA about the crash as well as a fire over the weekend at the 242 Street Station, she responded, “For details on the fire, I refer you to FDNY. For details on the possible incident involving an MTA bus and pedestrian, please contact NYPD for more information.”
