BRONX, NY - Cops are looking for the heartless thief who not only stole a high-end wheelchair - he rode it out the front door of the owner’s building. 




According to police, the incident occurred at approximately 2:11 a.m. inside the lobby of a residential building located at 888 Grand Concourse. Authorities say an unidentified individual entered the building and removed a wheelchair valued at around $5,000 in what is being investigated as a high-value wheelchair theft in Bronx apartment building lobby.





Police reports indicate that the suspect walked into the lobby area without drawing attention before taking the wheelchair and leaving the scene. The individual was last seen fleeing while riding the stolen item, making this a particularly unusual case of suspect fleeing on stolen wheelchair in NYC grand larceny case


The NYPD released surveillance video which showed the suspect knew exactly what he was looking for. He walked from the building’s lobby straight to underneath the staircase. There he found the expensive wheel chair. He is seen on the video, pulling the wheelchair out from underneath the stairwell, sitting in it and driving right out the front door of the building.


At this time, investigators have not determined the direction of travel, and no arrests have been made. The NYPD has released media related to the incident and is urging anyone who recognizes the individual to come forward as part of an ongoing NYPD investigation into Bronx lobby theft incident April 2026.


Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident. However, the theft represents a significant loss, particularly given the high value and essential nature of the stolen property. Cases like this highlight growing concerns around targeted theft of mobility equipment in New York City residential buildings.
