BRONX, NY - A Bronx man has been arrested in connection with an alleged assault on an NYPD school crossing guard that happened during the busy morning school rush near a local school in the Highbridge section of the Bronx.

According to police, Anthony Andrus, a 35-year-old man who lives on Gerard Avenue, was taken into custody on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at approximately 7:30 a.m. within the confines of the 44th Precinct. Authorities say the arrest was made as part of an ongoing investigation into an attack on a school crossing guard earlier this month.

Andrus was charged with five counts of assault.

Investigators say the incident occurred on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at around 8:15 a.m. at the intersection of Gerard Avenue and East 167th Street, a busy corridor near PS/IS 218 in Highbridge.

During that time, a 46-year-old female NYPD school crossing guard was performing her regular duties at the intersection. Crossing guards are stationed at key locations throughout New York City to help children and families safely cross the street during peak school hours.

Police say the crossing guard was actively managing pedestrian traffic and assisting students on their way to school when the attack happened.

According to authorities, an individual approached the crossing guard and punched her in the chest with a closed fist.

The sudden assault occurred while the guard was standing in the roadway directing pedestrians and ensuring children could cross safely.

Officials say the victim suffered pain to her chest as a result of the attack. No additional injuries were reported.

After the assault, police say the suspect fled the scene on foot, running northbound on Gerard Avenue.

The incident triggered an investigation by officers assigned to the 44th Precinct, who worked to identify and locate the suspect.

Following investigative efforts, authorities say they were able to identify Anthony Andrus as the individual responsible for the attack.

Police arrested Andrus on March 11, 2026, roughly one week after the alleged assault near the Highbridge school intersection.

He has been charged with five counts of assault in connection with the incident.

The investigation remains ongoing.

The incident has renewed concerns about safety for NYC school crossing guards, who play a critical role in protecting students during the morning and afternoon school commute.

Every day, crossing guards across the Bronx and the rest of New York City help guide thousands of students across busy intersections, particularly near schools like PS/IS 218.

Police are urging anyone who witnesses violence against city employees or school safety personnel to report it immediately.

Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the confrontation.
