BRONX, NY - A double homicide mystery could have potentially been cracked during a domestic dispute between the suspect and his ex. Police arrested a suspect in the Ferry Point Park double homicide following an unrelated arrest for robbery of his ex girlfriend.
A suspect wanted in connection with a Bronx double homicide near Ferry Point Park earlier this summer is now in custody after police say he got into trouble again — this time for allegedly robbing his ex-girlfriend in front of her child.
Police say Darwin Martinez, 20, has been charged with murder in the July 28 shooting deaths of Adam Waldropt and Gabriel Alvarez in Throggs Neck. The arrest comes months after investigators first began searching for the people seen on surveillance video shortly before the deadly gunfire erupted.
Authorities announced Tuesday that Martinez now faces murder charges tied to the early-morning shooting that killed the two men just outside Ferry Point Park.
According to police, the violence broke out around 6 a.m. on July 28 along Brush Avenue near Schley Avenue, a relatively isolated stretch of roadway near the park in the Throggs Neck section of the Bronx.
Investigators say Adam Waldropt, 29, was shot in the stomach and buttocks during the confrontation. Gabriel Alvarez, 22, was struck in the armpit and shoulder.
Both men died from their injuries after the gunfire erupted during what authorities described as a clash in the area.
The killings triggered a months-long investigation as detectives worked to identify everyone present at the scene.
In the early stages of the investigation, police said six men and one woman were captured on surveillance video shortly before the shooting started.
Investigators were seeking to question the group as they worked to determine what led to the deadly confrontation.
Officials have not yet confirmed whether anyone else seen in the footage will face charges. As of Wednesday, it remained unclear if additional arrests related to the Bronx double shooting are expected.
Martinez’s arrest in the murder case followed a separate incident that drew police attention.
Authorities say the suspect was involved in an alleged robbery of his ex-girlfriend that took place in front of her child, which ultimately led investigators to take him into custody.
Police have not yet released full details about that alleged robbery, but the case helped lead to Martinez being formally charged in the Bronx double murder investigation tied to Ferry Point Park.
The fatal shooting near Ferry Point Park shocked residents of the normally quiet Throggs Neck neighborhood, particularly because it happened in the early morning hours near a public park.
Detectives continue reviewing evidence and surveillance footage as they work to determine the roles of everyone present that morning.
For now, Martinez remains charged in connection with the July Bronx double homicide that killed Adam Waldropt and Gabriel Alvarez, while investigators continue to piece together exactly what led to the deadly encounter.
