‘Bath Mat’ Wearing Deranged Attacker Beats Women with Cellphone on Subway

BRONX, NY - An unsettling incident unfolded Saturday afternoon at a Bronx subway station, leaving two women shaken and injured after an unexpected attack during their commute.


According to police, two 46-year-old women were assaulted while exiting a northbound 6 train at the Elder Avenue station on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at approximately 1:40 p.m. The victims were stepping off the train when an unidentified man approached and struck them with a cellphone before fleeing the scene.





Authorities say the suspect approached the women without warning and used a cellphone as a weapon, striking both victims. The attacker then ran from the Emergency medical services responded quickly. Both victims sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene by EMS. No transport to a hospital was required.


The NYPD is continuing to investigate the incident, which adds to ongoing concerns about subway safety on the Bronx 6 train line, particularly during afternoon hours.



Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect. The individual sought is described as a male with a dark complexion who is approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall. He was last seen wearing a brown jacket that looked like a bath mat. He also wore red pants and thick black shoes.




Incidents like this highlight continued concerns around unprovoked assaults in New York City subway stations, especially in high-traffic transit hubs. Riders are urged to remain alert, report suspicious behavior, and use station emergency resources when necessary.


Police have not announced any arrests at this time, and the investigation remains ongoing.
