Police identified the victim as Christopher Redding, 16, of Walton Avenue.
According to police radio transmissions, police were looking for six males including two dark-skinned and one light-skinned teen wearing black, who reportedly fled towards West 230 Street and Bailey Avenue. A transmission moments later from the NYPD dispatcher stated that the suspects “hung out by Sedgwick Avenue.”
In an EMS radio transmission, a dispatcher asked a paramedic, “Where is the patient shot,” when the female paramedic responded, “The chest.”

At 5:29 p.m., a police officer halted traffic outside of BJ's on West 238 Street as police provided an escort for at least two ambulances who sped across West 238 Street towards Saint Barnabas Hospital.
“Felix,” a resident of the area, recalled coming out of the Bronx Ale House on West 238 Street when the gunfire erupted, stating, “There were like four or five kids that were running this way, west, and they shot one right there. One of them got shot in the back and the other teen got shot in one of the legs.”
Felix said that the teens who chased the victims down and shot Redding in the back were not even 18 years old.
Felix produced a photo showing police rendering aid to the young victim who was rushed to the hospital. Felix added, “They started doing the CPR and everything. He just died there.”
