BRONX, NY — Two former NYPD officers have been sentenced after pleading guilty in a disturbing Bronx sex abuse case involving an intoxicated woman who prosecutors say was unable to consent.

Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced that the two men will serve probation and must complete sex offender treatment programs. One of the defendants is also required to register as a sex offender under New York State law.

“This case is about accountability,” Clark said in a statement. “These two defendants took advantage of a woman who was intoxicated and thus unable to give consent. They are paying a severe price for their actions.”

Former NYPD Officers Face Probation and Lasting Consequences

The defendants, Julio Alcantara-Santiago, 42, and Christian Garcia, 34, were both fired from the NYPD following the investigation. Each now carries a criminal record stemming from the incident, which occurred in the Bronx in the early morning hours of July 9, 2023.

Alcantara-Santiago was sentenced to six years of probation and must register under the State Sex Offender Registration Act (SORA). He pleaded guilty to second-degree sexual abuse in September 2025 and is also required to participate in a court-mandated sex offender treatment program.

Garcia received one year of probation after pleading guilty to third-degree sexual abuse. He must also complete a sex offender treatment program as part of his sentence.

Both sentences were handed down by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Ralph Fabrizio.

What Investigators Say Happened

According to prosecutors, the victim was drinking with the two former officers at a Bronx nightspot when she became heavily intoxicated. Surveillance video shows the woman being physically assisted out of the venue, with both men holding her up by her arms.

Additional video footage captured the defendants helping the woman into the apartment building where Alcantara-Santiago lived.

The following morning, the victim went to a local hospital. Medical testing later identified DNA from both men, with a larger percentage linked to Alcantara-Santiago, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors Emphasize Accountability in Police Misconduct Case

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Shaylin French of the Bronx District Attorney’s Child Abuse/Sex Crimes Bureau, with support from senior prosecutors and supervisors within the Special Victims Division.

District Attorney Clark also credited the NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau and the NYPD Bronx Special Victims Squad for their role in the investigation.

“This outcome shows that no one is above the law,” Clark said. “These men were police officers trusted to protect the public. Instead, they abused that trust.”

A Case With Broader Implications

The sentencing comes amid continued scrutiny of police misconduct cases involving sexual abuse, particularly those involving vulnerable victims. Advocates say the case underscores the importance of independent investigations and strong prosecution when allegations involve law enforcement officers.

For the victim, prosecutors expressed hope that the resolution allows her to move forward.
