NYPD Arrests Bronx Man on Attempted Murder Charges Following Violent Subway Robbery Investigation


Random Attacker Stabs Straphanger, Attacks Good Samaritan Calling for Help

BRONX, NY — Cops made an arrest in conneciton with a disturbing subway stabbing in the Bronx. Investigators said the attacker stabbed a random subway rider and then attacked a bystander calling 911 for help.


According to police, Richard Shaw, a 32-year-old man who lives in Manhattan, was arrested Wednesday afternoon at approximately 1:30 p.m. within the confines of the 49 Precinct.


Shaw has been charged with a lengthy list of serious offenses, including:


  • Attempted Murder


  • Attempted Robbery with a Deadly Weapon


  • Attempted Robbery Causing Physical Injury


  • Attempted Robbery


  • Assault with a Weapon with Intent to Cause Serious Physical Injury


  • Assault with a Weapon with Intent to Cause Physical Injury


  • Assault with Intent to Cause Physical Injury (two counts)


  • Harassment (two counts)


Investigators arrested Shaw in connection with a violent subway robbery and stabbing that occurred earlier this week in the Bronx.


Police say the incident occurred on Monday, January 19, 2026, at approximately 6:17 p.m. on the northbound platform of the “2” subway line at the Prospect Avenue station, within the confines of the 40 Precinct and Transit District 12.


An 18-year-old male was standing on the platform when he was approached by an unidentified individual. A physical altercation followed, during which the suspect allegedly produced a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times.

As the incident unfolded, the suspect then approached a 19-year-old male bystander who was attempting to call 911. Police say the attacker attempted to steal the man’s cellphone while repeatedly punching and kicking the bystander in the face and head.


The suspect fled the station on foot and remains at large.

Victim Conditions.


The 18-year-old stabbing victim was transported by EMS to St. Barnabas Hospital and is listed in stable condition. The 19-year-old bystander refused medical attention at the scene. 


Using surveillance video taken from inside the subway, investigators were able to identify Shaw as the alleged attacker.
