BRONX, NY — A gas explosion rocked a Bronx high-rise early Saturday morning while FDNY crews were actively investigating reports of a gas odor, triggering a dangerous four-alarm fire that left one person dead and at least 15 others injured.
The incident unfolded at approximately 12:09 a.m. on Saturday at 3485 Bivonia Street in the Bronx, where Fire Department of New York (FDNY) units had been dispatched to investigate the smell of gas on the upper floors of the building. While firefighters were on scene — including members working on the 16th floor — a gas explosion occurred, causing severe structural damage and multiple fires.

Explosion Occurs During Active FDNY Investigation
According to FDNY officials, the explosion impacted the 15th, 16th, and 17th floors, creating an extremely hazardous environment for firefighters and residents alike.
“While our units were here investigating the odor of gas on the 15th and 16th floors, we had members on the 16th floor when the explosion occurred,” said FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito.
“We had severe structural damage in six apartments on each floor. We eventually had fire in five apartments on the 16th floor and five apartments on the 17th floor.”
Chief Esposito emphasized the risks faced by first responders during the operation, calling it “a very, very dangerous operation” and praising firefighters for their efforts to search apartments and protect civilian life amid unstable conditions.
One Fatality, Multiple Injuries Reported
FDNY confirmed one fatality as a result of the explosion and subsequent fire. FDNY EMS treated and transported 15 patients to nearby hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to serious. Officials have not yet released details about the victim pending family notification.
The cause of the gas explosion in the Bronx apartment building remains under investigation by FDNY Fire Marshals, who were on scene throughout the morning examining damaged units and utility systems.
Multiple city agencies responded alongside FDNY and EMS to assist residents displaced by the fire. The American Red Cross was deployed to provide emergency housing, food, and support services for affected families.
Residents were escorted from the building as safety assessments continued, with inspections ongoing to determine when — or if — occupants will be able to return.
Mayor Addresses Bronx Fire Response
New York City Mayor Zorhan Mamdani issued a statement early Saturday morning, confirming that the fire was under control but that emergency operations were continuing.
“City agencies are responding to a four-alarm fire in the Bronx this morning with a full, coordinated effort,” the mayor said. “I am with families at a nearby reception center, and we are working with the Red Cross to support displaced residents.”
The mayor added that searches, inspections, and utility restoration are ongoing at the scene near 3475–3485 Bivonia Street, and urged the public to avoid the area.
“My heart is with everyone affected, and I’m deeply grateful to our first responders,” Mamdani said. “We’ll keep New Yorkers updated.”
Investigation Ongoing
As of Saturday morning, FDNY officials say the building remains secured while investigators work to determine what caused the explosion and whether gas system failures played a role. Additional updates are expected as inspections continue and more information becomes available.
