BRONX LOCAL NEWS - A Bronx man has been sentenced to 22 years in prison after a brutal killing on the streets of the Bronx and a violent attack on correction officers while he was locked up awaiting trial.

Anthony Taveras-Morales, 24, was sentenced to 20 years for the fatal shooting of 29-year-old Jaguar Housey, and an additional two years for slashing two NYC Department of Correction officers while on Rikers Island. The sentences will be served consecutively, meaning Taveras-Morales will spend the next two decades behind bars.

According to Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark, the shooting was the result of a feud between Taveras-Morales and Housey that had been simmering for days. The two had a physical altercation on September 14, 2020, which Taveras-Morales posted on social media, further escalating the tension.

Two days later, on September 16, Housey spotted Taveras-Morales on Prospect Avenue and ran after him. In an unprovoked attack, Taveras-Morales shot Housey twice—once in the arm and then fatally in the head. Thankfully, no innocent bystanders were caught in the gunfire, but Housey didn’t survive.

The investigation, which included a tip from the public, eventually led to Taveras-Morales’ capture on February 23, 2022, in an apartment in the Bronx.

While awaiting trial at Rikers Island, Taveras-Morales did not stop his violent behavior. He started a fire in his cell, and when two correction officers tried to intervene, he slashed them with a sharp object. The officers managed to protect themselves and others in the jail, preventing further injuries.

In a statement, District Attorney Darcel D. Clark made it clear that the 22-year sentence was a message: "This killing was the brutal culmination of a feud that started several days earlier. With no regard to other people on the street, the defendant shot his intended target multiple times. Thankfully no innocent bystanders were hit by gunfire. While awaiting trial at Rikers Island, this defendant assaulted two Correction Officers who attempted to put out a fire he started in his cell. He will now spend 22 years in prison, sending a message that anyone who commits violence on our streets or in the jails will be held fully accountable.”

NYC Correction Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie also condemned Taveras-Morales’ actions, calling the attack on the officers "brazen." She commended the officers for their bravery, saying, "These officers showed tremendous courage under direct threat, and their actions prevented other people from getting hurt.”

Taveras-Morales pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and second-degree assault earlier this year. Bronx Supreme Court Justice Tara Collins handed down the sentence: 20 years for manslaughter and 2 additional years for assaulting the correction officers.
