BRONX LOCAL NEWS - Four firefighters suffered minor injuries, and multiple families have been displaced after a fire broke out inside of an auto mechanic shop that quickly spread to a pair of two-family homes.

Fire officials told the Bronx Voice that the fire broke out inside of the one-story garage that housed General Mechanic / Gabaon Body Shop at 1740 East Tremont Avenue, at 11:23 a.m. on November 8.

One fire official said that upon arrival, firefighters observed “heavy fire throughout” the building. Fire from the rear of the building extended to the two homes at 1530 and 1532 Rosedale Avenue. The official said that four firefighters were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries. Before the fire was extinguished the roof of the auto-body shop had collapsed.

The fire official stated that the department used 200 fire and EMS members from 44 units to battle the blaze that was brought under control at 2:28 p.m., but according to television news reports from the scene, firefighters were still pouring water on the buildings at nightfall.

The American Red Gross of Greater New York reported that 19 residents from 5 families had been displaced by the fire and were being assisted. Any additional residents impacted by the blaze should contact the Red Cross at 1 (877) 2767 and callers should choose “Option 1.”

The FDNY says that the cause of this fire remains under investigation. The Bronx Voice asked the FDNY about an unused fire hydrant observed at Van Nest Avenue and East 180 Street as well as a larger-than-normal water hose line that stretched across East 180 Street from Morris Park Avenue to East Tremont. The hose cutoff traffic along the busy street and traffic was blocked on the other side of East Tremont at Commonwealth Avenue that was shutdown with fire trucks and ambulances. The FDNY did not respond to the request.

The blaze was the second major fire to hit the block in 7 years, as firefighters battled a 7-alarm blaze that broke out inside a furniture store on the ground floor of a 4-story apartment building next door at 1750 East Tremont Avenue on January 2, 2018. In that fire 22 residents and one firefighter were injured, and the building was destroyed. It took the owner several years to rebuild, but the furniture shop has since returned, and the apartments above have been reoccupied.

The Bronx Voice had asked an official at the FDNY if a cause of the 2018 fire had been determined, he vowed to get back to us with that information but has so far failed to do so.
