BRONX - For the better part of two decades the Bronx District Office of the New York City Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has been at East Fordham Road and Crotona Avenue—10 days after it moved to the Bronx Terminal Market, customers continued to arrive at the shuttered location.

On August 22, the DMV posted information on its website that the popular location at 696 East Fordham Road in the Belmont section would close at the end of business on September 26, and would reopen on the sixth floor of the Bronx Terminal Market at 610 Exterior Street in the South Bronx on October 1.

DMV Commissioner Mark Schroeder said of the move, “In addition to being a more welcoming and modern facility, the new Bronx Terminal Market location will feature an improved layout that will allow our staff to handle transactions more efficiently.”

On October 10, a visit to the Fordham Road building found that 11 people visited the closed building in just 30 minutes. The first customer was a Spanish speaking man who drove up and then a Spanish speaking woman who walked to the building.

They were both directed to the poorly made sign in the window that read, “DMV Moved” in red marker. They would both check the address on their respective phones. Google Maps told them it was 31 minutes to get to the Bronx Terminal Market. The man offered the woman a ride and the woman accepted.

Angel, a Belmont resident, claimed that the DMV sent him confirmation for an appointment on that day at the Fordham Road location, only to look at his phone and cry out in disgust, “They just changed the address without telling me, they waited until the last minute.” Despite the DMV website stating that the new location will handle all DMV business, Angel was then told he had to go to the location on 125 Street in Manhattan to contest a ticket.

On October 10, Jaun at the Albany DMV was asked about customers arriving at the Fordham Road building, he acknowledged, “I was made aware today that some people weren’t even certain that this new place existed.”

The Fordham DMV had a policy since the COVID-19 pandemic where customers had to have an appointment to gain entry to the building. According to DMV’s Tim O’Brien, DMV clients will still need an appointment to conduct different transactions, but members of the public can enter the building to obtain drivers manuals and different forms.

On September 29, the Bronx Borough President's office sent out a press release on the move that stated, “This location will bring more convenience and access for Bronx residents to get the services they need, right here in the heart of our borough.”

According to the MTA website, DMV clients who incorrectly arrived by mass transportation to the Fordham Road office had three choices to get to the Bronx Terminal Market—one bus that included a 15-minute walk, another bus that included a 19-minute walk or another bus that included a 10-minute walk.

“BitchBronx” posted a video to Tik-Tok of her leaving the Bronx Terminal Market DMV that quickly generated more than 20,000 views as she mentioned how fast and easy her visit was. One unnamed person asked, “Are they less rude there?” While Manuel Reyes remarked, “How was the parking, because parking sucks around there especially if the Yankees are playing.”

The Bronx District Office of the DMV is located at 610 Exterior Street, 6th floor, and is open Monday – Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. For more information visit their website at: https://dmv.ny.gov
