BRONX- A still-unidentified man armed with a large kitchen knife was shot dead by police after lunging at an officer inside the 7-Eleven in Throggs Neck—around the corner from the 45th Precinct. Who he is and why terrorized the store worker and then charged a cop is still unknown at this time.

According to NYPD Assistant Chief Benjamin Gurley, the Commanding Officer of Patrol Borough Bronx, the incident unfolded at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 9, when a store employee sought help at the 45th Precinct.

At a press conference at the 45th Precinct, Gurley said, “They observed the man in the rear by the coffee machines. As the officers approached, one officer gave several commands to the male inside the location to take his hands out of his sweatshirt pocket.

“As the officer gave those commands,” Gurley continued, “that male then advanced on the officer, revealing a knife in his hand.” Gurley added that the individual lunged at the officer, who fired one shot that struck the man in the chest.

Gurley concluded, “Then both officers immediately rendered first aid,” as one of the two officers happened to also be an EMT.

The wounded man, only described as a Black male in his 30’s who resided in the Bronx, was rushed to Jacobi Hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 3:14 p.m.

Gurley noted that the facts of the case are backed up by police body cam video, store surveillance and eyewitness accounts.
