Borough Groups Join Forces to Oppose Cross-Bronx Expansion Project

New York State is driving a $900 million effort to “transform” the highway to accommodate bridge repair work. Advocates and locals are trying to hit the brakes.  This article originally appeared in The City. By  Jonathan Custodio Follow @Bronxvoice1 BRONX - More than a dozen community and advocacy groups are joining forces against a $900 million “Five Bridges Project” to “transform” the Cross Bronx Expressway.  That project, which Gov. Kathy Hochul announced in January, aims to repair five bridges along the Cross Bronx Expressway. Key to the project is a “multi-modal connector” — temporary new roadways to keep traffic flowing that would then become permanent bus, bike and pedestrian lanes alongside the highway. A $150 million federal grant is helping pay for the project. BRONX - Armed robbers on scooters robbed two groups of men in the Bronx, cops said. Investigators released surveillance video of the suspects, one of which had a food delivery bag.

Police said the same suspects are being sought in two separate stickups in different ends of the Bronx.

The first robbery took place at around 9:45 pm on July 26. A group of four men were standing in the vicinity of Pelham Parkway South and Barnes Avenue in the northern Bronx. Cops said two men on separate scooters rode up on the group and drew guns on them. They then forcibly took property off the victims and rode off without incident.

The next robbery took place at around 6:15 pm on July 29 in the South Bronx. Two men were standing in the vicinity of Freeman Street and Chisholm Avenue in Charlotte Gardens. The two scooter riding robbers rode up and pulled out handguns. The crooks then removed the property off the victims. Cops said the gunmen then rode off southbound on 169th Street.

Police released surveillance video of the suspects. One of the suspects wore a black balaclava and had a large red food delivery bag on his back.

The other suspect wore a helmet which covered his face.
