Bronx Fave Wicked Wolf Has New Home

FOOD - For many months, those driving by the former Olde Stone Mill on Scarsdale Ave. in Tuckahoe/Yonkers, noticed a sign out front: ‘The Wicked Wolf is coming!’ It turns out it is the same Wicked Wolf management that had been operating on E. Tremont Ave. in the Throggs Neck section of the Bronx for 14 years.

The renovation to the Westchester landmark building has finally been completed and Wicked Wolf North is open for business.

Proprietor Seamus Carey and his management team: Emma Henrys, Eileen Tierney, and Jennifer Canerico, will be sharing front-of-the-house duties throughout the week. In charge of the kitchen is Executive Chef Jack Ginty.

Chef Ginty, who had done stints in N.Y.C. including Smith & Wollensky, offers an eclectic tavern menu with such starters as: Mussels, white wine, jalapeno grilled crostini; Crabcake Tots with braised tomato; thick cut Pastrami Bacon with Maple Bourbon mustard; and Fried Calamari. There is also a Charcuterie Board with variety of select meats, cheeses, and condiments.

Fresh salads include Classic Caesar, Cobb Salad, Beet & Goat Cheese, Arugula Pear. Handhelds include a Steak Sandwich, filet mignon, mushrooms, onions & Swiss; and an 8 oz. Wolf Burger served on Brioche bun.

Hearty main courses include Braised Lamb Shank; Seafood Fra Diavolo, with clams, mussels, shrimp, lobster, in a spicy marinara over fresh bucatini; Short Rib Stroganoff with Pappardelle; Pistachio Salmon; and classic Chicken Kiev. Traditional Irish dishes are always available like Shepherd’s Pie and Fish & Chips.

Big Shellfish Towers are on hand, as well as CBA Dry-Aged Steaks and Chops. A special Bar Menu is offered all day.

I visited the original Wicked Wolf on E. Tremont Ave. in Throggs Neck on a couple of occasions. It is an upscale tavern with an eclectic menu that also covers a lot of ground. The staff was friendly and most eager to please. Ordered a Corned Beef Sandwich with melted Swiss cheese. It came with steak fries, pickle, ketchup, and mustard. It had been warmed, hefty, and hearty. Enjoyed every bite! A couple of seasonal Sam Adams’ Oktoberfest brews helped wash it all down.

There was a special Oktoberfest menu available, and my waitress said that many of these dishes often appeared on the regular menu.

Special Hint: There is a live entertainment schedule in the works. Karaoke Mondays. Private party facilities. Free parking.

TENDER BRISKET & PAT LA FREIDA BURGERS AT SMOKEHOUSE TAILGATE GRILL!

Partners Mike Hoffer and Justin Zeytoonian re-opened their industrial-designed BBQ restaurant a year ago in The Rockwell, a new building along North Ave., New Rochelle, near Iona College. It is directly across from the shuttered original which they founded in 2007. The well edited menu includes a good selection of craft beers along with signature Tacos, BBQ Chicken and Racks of Ribs. Recently, we ordered their popular Brisket, and it was flavorful and tender. The Tomahawk Burger is prepared with Pat La Frieda beef and is a satisfying winner. The new Smokehouse Tailgate Grill is located at 587 North Ave., New Rochelle, not far from Iona College. (914-813-8686). Their second location: Smokehouse Tailgate Grill, 320 Mamaroneck Ave., Mamaroneck. (914-341-1655). www.shtailgate.com

OKTOBERFEST SEASON HAS ARRIVED!

Oktoberfest season is upon us, it actually begins in September, and many folks enjoy the hearty flavors of Bavaria in the fall. Here are suggestions where you can take in German-style beers and specialties. You can also check with your local pubs and taverns who often serve Oktoberfest dishes this time of the year.

DUNNE’S PUB,

WHITE PLAINS!

Their popular Oktoberfest Menu is available daily. Hearty versions of: Potato Pancake Appetizer, Sauerbraten, a hearty Triple Wurst Plate with all the trimmings, Veal Schnitzel, and Calf’s Liver, German style, and Pork Cutlet Schnitzel.

Dunne’s is a neighborhood treasure, an authentic Irish tavern with all the traditional Gaelic accoutrements intact. Owner Declan Farrell has upgraded the premises but taken great strains not to get caught up in the modernist mode. It is a friendly, home-style place with a good kitchen to boot, dishing out generous servings of traditional Irish American fare at prices that will leave some money in your wallet.

Open 7 days for lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch. Municipal parking; free evenings. Dunne’s Pub, 15 Shapham Place, White Plains. 914-421-1451 www.dunnespub.com
