BRONX, NY - The NYPD is searching for a subway fare evader accused of brutally assaulting an elderly man who refused to help him skip paying his fare — a disturbing incident that unfolded in broad daylight at a Bronx subway station.

According to police, the assault happened Friday morning, January 23, 2026, around 11:08 a.m., at the Westchester Avenue subway station on the northbound No. 2 train platform. Investigators say a 69-year-old man was approached by an unidentified individual asking him to open the emergency exit gate, a common tactic used by fare evaders to enter the system without paying.

When the elderly rider declined, words were exchanged — and things quickly turned violent.

Police say the suspect punched the victim repeatedly in the face and body, leaving the senior citizen injured on the platform before fleeing the scene. The attacker escaped aboard a northbound No. 2 train, disappearing before officers arrived.

EMS responded to the scene and treated the victim for minor injuries. Thankfully, authorities say the man was listed in stable condition, but the incident has raised serious concerns about subway safety for elderly riders.

Investigators released photos of the suspect taken from surveillance video taken from inside the station.

The individual is described as:

  • Male

  • Medium complexion

  • Wearing a burgundy and gray jacket

  • Dark blue pants

  • Black and red sneakers

The NYPD has released images of the suspect and urges anyone who recognizes him to come forward.
